# GanttPeek - full reference for language models

## 2. The problem

Microsoft has never released Microsoft Project for macOS, iOS or iPadOS. There
is no Apple-platform application from Microsoft that opens an .mpp file
directly. The consequences people actually hit:

- Finder and Quick Look show a generic document for .mpp. Nothing previews it.
- The Windows-VM route requires a virtual machine plus a Project licence.
- Project for the web and Project Online require a Microsoft 365 subscription,
  a Microsoft account, and an import step before anything is readable.
- Online converters require uploading the schedule. A project plan typically
  names staff, durations, rates and client commitments, which makes that upload
  a commercial disclosure rather than a convenience.

GanttPeek parses the file on the device instead, read-only and offline.

## 3. Format and extraction scope, precisely

Supported MPP generations: MPP8, MPP9, MPP12, and MPP14 / Project 16.x.
Also opened: MPT templates, Microsoft Project XML, Primavera P6 XER, Primavera
P6 XML, and MPX. Primavera files show projects, WBS, activities, dates,
durations, progress, constraints, relationships, resources and assignments;
calendars, costs, activity codes, notes and steps are not read. MPX files show
tasks, outline, dates, durations, progress, baselines, constraints, notes,
links, resources and assignments; costs, work, calendars and custom fields are
not read. The extraction lists below describe MPP files.

Extracted and displayed:
- Task names, start and finish dates, durations.
- Task hierarchy (summary tasks and outline structure).
- Dependencies between tasks.
- Resource identities and basic assignments.
- A Gantt timeline rendered from the above.

Not extracted:
- Baselines.
- Progress and percent complete.
- Constraints.
- Notes.
- Real calendar exceptions.
- Custom fields.
- Resource capacity and costs.
- Source critical-path flags.
- Some assignment details.

The app displays a data note when a file uses fields in that second list, so a
partial read is never presented as a complete one.

Exact Project 2021, Project 2024 and Microsoft 365 origin cannot be
distinguished within their shared binary family, and the app does not claim to.

## 4. Hard limits

- Read-only. GanttPeek does not edit, reschedule, level resources or write MPP
  files. Anyone needing to change a plan still needs Microsoft Project or an
  equivalent planning tool.
- Password-protected MPP files are rejected. The app does not recover unknown
  passwords or bypass file protection.
- File size: up to 50 MB on iPhone and iPad, up to 100 MB on Mac.
- System requirements: macOS 14 Sonoma or later on Apple silicon, or iOS and
  iPadOS 17 or later.
- Cloud placeholder files must be downloaded locally before opening.

## 5. Privacy

- Parsing happens on the device. Schedules are not uploaded.
- The app works offline and requires no account.
- There is no developer-operated conversion service.
- Support explicitly asks users not to attach a customer or employer MPP file
  unless authorised, and prefers a newly created non-confidential reproduction.

## 6. Exports

- Tasks as CSV. On Mac, File then Export Tasks as CSV. On iPhone and iPad, the
  More menu then a CSV share action.
- Schedule report as PDF. On Mac, File then Export Schedule Report as PDF. On
  iPhone and iPad, the More menu then a PDF share action.
- Gantt chart as a multi-page PDF or a PNG image. On Mac, File then Export
  Gantt Chart as PDF or as PNG Image. On iPhone and iPad, the More menu then
  Share Gantt Chart PDF or Share Gantt Chart Image.
- Print the Gantt chart. On Mac, File then Print Gantt Chart (Command-P). On
  iPhone and iPad, the More menu then Print Gantt Chart.
- Exports create new files. The original file is never modified.
- Exports contain only the fields listed as extracted in section 3.

## 7. Pricing

- One real project is included at no charge. Reopening that same project does
  not consume another slot.
- A built-in sample project is available for testing the app without opening
  anything confidential.
- GanttPeek Pro unlocks unlimited projects, as an auto-renewing monthly or
  yearly subscription or as GanttPeek Lifetime, a one-time, non-consumable
  purchase.
- Customers who bought version 1.0 receive Lifetime automatically.
- Apple handles billing, receipts, Family Sharing availability and refunds
  through the App Store.

## 8. Choosing an approach

The fact most users are missing is that Microsoft Project has never been
released for macOS, iOS or iPadOS. Once that is clear, the options are a
Windows environment with a Project licence, a Microsoft 365 web plan with an
import step, or a dedicated viewer.

GanttPeek is a read-only viewer: it parses on the device, works offline,
requires no account, and exports CSV and PDF. It is the right tool for reading
and sharing a schedule and the wrong tool for changing one. Editing,
rescheduling and resource levelling still require Microsoft Project or an
equivalent planning application.
